Psyllium Hulls Combination

Psyllium Hulls Combination is a bulk laxative formula which absorbs toxins from the bowel and soothes inflamed and irritated tissues. Psyllium Hulls Combination also provides bulk to the stool and encourages the growth of healthy intestinal flora.

Psyllium Hulls Combination is generally used for ulcerative colitis, constipation, Crohn's, diarrhea, dyspepsia, gastritis, hemorrhoids, irritable bowel syndrome, and gastric and duodenal ulcers. Psyllium Hulls Combination has also been used to reduce cholesterol, manage diabetes, and eliminate toxicity associated with arthritis.

Hibiscus stimulates circulation, checks bleeding, soothes inflamed tissues, and relaxes muscle spasms. Hibiscus has traditionally been used for dysmenorrhea and poor circulation. Hibiscus is also a popular coloring and flavoring ingredient in herbal teas.

Licorice increases the production of digestive fluids and bile, soothes mucus membranes (especially in the stomach), relieves pain and inflammation, relaxes muscle spasms, enables the body to expel phlegm, strengthens the adrenal glands, stimulates the adrenal cortex, lowers cholesterol, and acts as a mild laxative. Licorice is also particularly beneficial for gastrointestinal problems such as gastritis, peptic ulceration, and excessive stomach acid. Licorice is a powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic, and has been proven as an effective treatment for chronic hepatitis B and liver cirrhosis. Licorice has also been shown in numerous studies to be quite effective in treating hypoglycemia, especially due to adrenal stress. Additionally, licorice exhibits antibacterial, antifungal, antimicrobial, antiviral, and possible anticancer properties

Psyllium hulls, also called husks, are the outer coverings of psyllium seeds, containing the majority of the bulking mucilage—complex carbohydrates which expand, becoming gelatinous when soaked in water. Psyllium hulls are favored over the seed germ for use as a bulk fiber laxative, since the hull swells in water to 8-14 times their dry volume. Psyllium hulls also act like a colon "broom,” cleansing the intestines and absorbing toxins adhered to intestinal walls. Psyllium has become a widely-used fiber supplement, as high fiber diets are recommended when trying to control weight and lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Dietary fibers, such as psyllium, help provide a sense of fullness and slow the absorption of cholesterol and sugars into the blood stream. Psyllium increases available water content within the large intestine, thus increasing the bulk of the stool and making its passage easier. This action also helps relieve hemorrhoids by reducing irritation of the distended vein. Furthermore, the soothing, healing effect produced by the mucilage-rich husks and seeds helps relieve gastrointestinal inflammation associated with acid indigestion and stomach and duodenal ulcers.

Psyllium is commonly used to correct diarrhea and to aid irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Psyllium is also effective for treating Crohn's and ulcerative colitis. Furthermore, preliminary research findings indicate psyllium may provide an indirect protective action against colon cancer.

Studies also show psyllium to be helpful for managing diabetes. According to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, psyllium reduced the rise in postprandial (after a meal) glucose and insulin concentrations in participants with non-insulin-dependent diabetes.

Plantago psyllium is a popular product that is best known as a bulking and lubricating agent for the digestive system.

Psyllium is an annual herb native to Mediterranean climates. All parts of the plant are used by some cultures, but the seed and seed hulls are preferred. The husk mucilage is used as a thickener or stabilizer in some frozen dairy desserts. It is also used as a bulking agent.

Psyllium hulls have a remarkable ability to absorb water many times their own weight, which makes them swell. This exerts a gentle pressure on intestinal walls, stimulating them to contract normally. However, psyllium must be used with plenty of water, and it should not be used if someone has a bowel obstruction. Psyllium are the seeds of one species of the herb plantain. Plantain grows very low to the ground on roadsides and produces small white flowers. The seeds are smooth, dull ovals with a pinkish-white or dark brown coloring, and the leaves of the psyllium are 4-10 inches long.

Plantain is commonly considered a weed. If seed pods are not harvested before they break open, the 15,000 seeds that the plant can grow may be scattered about by the wind.

The species of plantain known as psyllium (Plantago ovata) is an annual herb native to Mediterranean regions of Europe, the Canary Islands, Africa and Pakistan and is heavily cultivated in Spain, France, and India. While it has been planted and grown in the United States, most of the psyllium used in the U.S. is imported from France.

Traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic physicians have used both the seeds and the leaves of psyllium for centuries. Psyllium was esteemed by Indian, Persian, and Arab physicians of the Middle Ages as a lubricating agent for the lower intestinal tract. Psyllium entered European folk medicine in the 16th century and was eventually accepted by European physicians. Much later, in the 19th century, psyllium was also accepted for use in America.

Plantain leaves have been used throughout history to soothe minor bites and stings. They were also applied to blisters and used to stop bleeding. In the New World, Native Americans used plantain leaves to treat abrasions, sprains, gout, and as a wash for sore eyes. Plantain has a powerful drawing action which helps to draw infection and poisons from the body.

Bulk Laxative

The plantain or psyllium seeds are coated with mucilage, a glatinous material that swells upon contact with moisture. Psyllium is the most popular mucilaginous herb in use today. The seeds, taken with plenty of fluid, act as a bulk-forming laxative because of their considerable swelling power. The mucilaginous property of psyllium produces the swelling of the seeds from 8-14 times its original size.

Psyllium is among the safest and most gentle laxatives and aids especially in cases of chronic constipation. Intake of psyllium increases the volume of the intestinal contents which encourages bowel activity. Meanwhile, the mucilage facilitates the smooth passage of the intestinal contents.

Psyllium also absorbs excess fluid in the intestinal tract and restores normal bulk to stool. Recent research has found that psylliums ability to manage diarrhea may be useful for patients in intensive care who are being fed intravenously.

A diet including psyllium is very helpful for diabetics. In a study where non-insulin-dependent diabetics were given psyllium before meals, glucose levels following the meals were significantly reduced.

Recently scientists have discovered that psyllium has the remarkable ability to reduce cholesterol levels. One study at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine showed that 26 men with elevated cholesterol levels had an average drop in cholesterol of 15-20% after taking supplements containing significant amounts of psyllium.

Psyllium has no harmful side effects, if taken with ample amounts of water. If insufficient water is consumed when taking psyllium, constipation can result.

The hulls contain more fiber than the seeds. Psyllium seeds are gentler and more suitable for spastic bowel conditions, while the hulls are more for serious bowel cleansing. The product is best taken in bulk form, about one heaping teaspoon in a large glass of water or juice, once or occasionally twice daily. Most people need to start with a smaller amount (say one-half teaspoon) and gradually work up.In capsule form, recommended intake is two capsules twice daily with a large glass of water.

After taking psyllium, one should drink one to two large glasses of water. It is also important to drink extra water throughout the day to keep the stool well hydrated. Because psyllium is so cooling to the digestive tract, it may help to take a little ginger with it, too, if you take it on a regular basis.
